APPLICATION CONDITIONS FOR THE 2018 KOMURCUOĞLU INTERNATIONAL STONE SCULPTURE COLONY

“Nihat Kömürcüoğlu Culture, Art, Tourism and Promotion Foundation’s general purpose is to present most outstanding examples of cultural and artistic studies and at the same time promoting the national, cultural and artistic values of our city and country by creating an international environment through art.”

GENERAL EXPLANATIONS

1-Nihat Kömürcüoğlu Culture, Art, Tourism and Promotion Foundation’s (to be called NKVAKFI) 8th Kömürcüoğlu International Stone Sculpture Colony will be held at Kömürcüoğlu Mermer Sanayi A.Ş. facility that is located at “Pamukkale yolu 4.ncü Km Korucuk Mahallesi - Denizli / TÜRKİYE” during 21 May-21 June 2018.

2-The concept changes every year. 2018 Kömürcüoğlu International Stone Sculpture Colony’s this year’s concept is “Visual and functional, contemporary sculptures that can be exhibited in public areas.”

3-The artists who will apply to the colony must have been trained in sculpture, participated in at least 5 international symposiums and activities, and must submit the photograph of 5 finished works to the Application Form.

4-A total of 10 artists, national and international, participate the Colony. The artists who will participate in the colony will be determined by the Jury formed by NKVAKFI, based on the application files sent by the artists. It is at the discretion of the Jury that the number of the most participating artists is selected as missing or over. The jury will also prepare a reserve list of five people to be chosen from the applications made. One of the artists listed on the backup list will be invited instead of the noble list members who have not joined the quorum with any excuse. If the artist is unable to attend the colony for any reason, he/she must inform the Colony at least 21 days before the start date of the Colony. The right of participation of entitled artist who excused their attendance will be cancelled, likewise those who have not informed their absence at the workshop within 5 days after the start of the colony.

5-Only marble and travertine will be used as sculpture material. NKVAKFI commits to every artist, to provide enough of travertine and marble to their project. In addition, the installation of the works, and the materials required for this, will be covered by NKVAKFI with the condition that it is stated in the application file. The artist may use other materials in addition to the use of marble or travertine, but the technical solution and costs will be on to the artist’s account.

6-US$ 3,000 (only three thousand US dollars) will be paid as royalties for overseas participants. Domestic participant will be paid in Turkish Lira equal to the amount of US$ 3,000 (only three thousand US dollars). The payment will be made after completion of the work.

7-In case the works are not completed within the Colonial period for any reason, the decision of the Jury shall be valid. Artists who anticipate that the work can be completed in a longer period of time than 30 days, may start working with the jury’s decision earlier than the date of the colony’s starting date; or continue working after the end of the Colony to complete their work, which is a must. Unfinished work shall and will not be accepted. Accommodation costs during this period shall be covered by NKVAKFI and artists cannot charge additional fees for extra working days.

8-At the end of the colony, each artist will receive a certificate of participation issued & approved by NKVAKFI.

9-Documents in the application files shall and will be available for press releases and for subsequent catalogs and similar publications later on.

10-On the evening of Sunday, May 20th, 2018, NKVAKFI Chairman Nihat Kömürcüoğlu will organize a meeting and Welcome Dinner with the participating artists and it is obligatory to attend this Meeting & Dinner.

11-Herewith, all artists accept and confirm attendance in the Closing Ceremony and Cocktail, which will be held on 22nd of June 2018.

12-The artist will hand over the completed work to the Nihat Kömürcüoğlu Foundation with all copyrights. The property will be owned by the Foundation. NKVAKFI shall have the right to compile, temporarily display elsewhere, transfer ownership, catalog, and slide, take photographs and disseminate them at the same time. Additional royalties for these shall not be paid.

13-In case there is a demand from students, each participating artist shall have the right to create workshops and perform artistic activities within a 2 hour program within 1 working day.

14-It is highly recommended that the artists shall bring visuals, presentations and documents containing cultural, artistic values or works of art belonging to their cities and countries in order to strengthen the cultural activities between the countries, to be shared with the audience and the art environment.

15-The study area will be systematically visited by local groups, such as local artists, photograph groups, students, young people, elderly people and disabled people. Artists shall and may be required to give brief information to the visitors about sculpture and art.

16-The artists shall come up with the related model of the sculpture. This model will be added to the NKVAKF archive at the end of the Colony.

17-For the Aegean Stone Sculpture Academy to be held between July 2nd and July 20th, 2017, the applicants must be proposing students from their own country and the contact information of the proposed students must be submitted with the application form.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1-The artists have to supply the hand tools by themselves and bring them to the Colony.

2-For the artists, 220V electricity, extension cable, compressed water and air compressors and extension hoses will be provided.

3-The work will be carried out under tend, but outdoor. Artists must be prepared for seasonal weather conditions, such as sudden rain and hot weather.

4-Working hours are between 08.00 and 18.00. However, changes may be made.

5-Participating artists will stay in single rooms at the Hotel NKVAKFI will arrange.

6-Transportation, food and accommodation of the participating artists shall be covered by NKVAKFI.

a) Standard Hotel expenses are on NKVAKFI, extra expenses are on the artists’ account.

b) Lunches are provided by NKVAKFI on working days.

7-Transportation costs cover; economy class for all artists, round - trip airfare and airport pick - up and drop off at the airport.

8-The transportation, accommodation and food-expenses of the attendants brought in by the participants are covered by themselves.

9-a) The artists are obliged to have their own travel health insurance.

b) NKVAKFI will insure accident insurance for every artist to be valid during working hours during the colony.

10-The artists are obliged to be in the working area within working hours and to follow the working schedule. Exceptions that may arise shall be evaluated by the Colony Management.

APPLICATION CONDITIONS

The files to be taken as basis for the selection of the artists to participate the Colony shall include the following items;

1-Colony Application Form (Annex 1)

2-Colony Participant Statement (Annex 2)

3-The most important 5 (five) events the artist has attended (shall not exceed a 1 page in doc.file); CV with photo in English and/or Turkish language; a photocopy of the certificate of the sculpture education (Annex 3 a-b)

4-Visual images of the five finished works (not exceeding 5 GB) from the symposiums performed by the artist (Annex 4)

5-Photographs of the model showing the artist's work at different angles and measures of marble block or travertine blocks to be used. (The artists must apply only the sculptural design they offer in the application form.) (Annex 5)

6-Mounting scheme. (Annex 6)

7-Additional materials to be used in the sculpture, if any (Annex 7)

8-Description of the work in either English or Turkish language, minimum ½ A4 paper (Annex 8)

9-The application file containing the above documents must be forwarded to the following contact address until 12pm on Monday, 19.03.2018. Applications only made by e-mail and cargo will be accepted. Incomplete applicants will not be assessed. The results will be released on Tuesday, 3.04.2018.

10-Artists who applied and become participant to the Colony are considered to have read and accepted the Colony Participation Specification and the Colony Participation Statement.

ANNEX 2 - COLONIAL PARTICIPANT DECLARATION

I herewith confirm on the occasion of the letter of invitation that the NKVAKFI had sent to me, I accepted this invitation and signed the attached "Colony Application Form" with my own request and free will.

I promise that during the colony I will not be outside my work area and that I will act cautiously in matters relating to the work area described to me.

I am aware of the risks that may arise during my participation to the 8th Kömürcüoğlu International Stone Sculpture Colony.

I have enough physical conditions to take part in this column that requires physical strength.

I am aware of the fact that in the working environment, there are revolving wheels, heavy marble blocks and tools and equipment that can carry many hazards.

I take responsibility to protect myself from these dangers.

I undertake to make a medical examination and medical check in a health institution that the NKVAFI will determine.

I am aware that the NKVAKFI will make a personal accident insurance that will be valid throughout the Colony and during working hours, but that this institution does not have any drug or medical aid liability to me.

I accept and declare that I am responsible for expenses arising from health problems that may arise during my participation.
